About Mary Bailey:
I have lived with art my entire life, visiting art museums as a child, going to the park or zoo armed with a sketchbook rather than a ball or frisbee. My work in clay has been primarily self taught after a brief apprenticeship with my Mom, Patricia Oberloier, M.F.A.. My pottery is all made by hand, either wheel thrown or hand built. My handles are pulled, a process that gives them a particular liveliness. The consistency in thrown forms comes from weighing the clay and measuring as I throw, as well as 27 years of experience! Nothing is ever ram pressed or poured, nor do I employ people to produce for me. Nothing is ever purchased fired once to be glazed by me. I make everything from wad of stoneware clay to finished wares. I mix my own glazes and do all of the decorating with a little bamboo brush, no patterns or stencils. On the average, a pot takes about three weeks to complete. The pottery is fired to 2,400 degrees in a gas kiln, a process taking 3-4 days from the time the kiln is loaded to when it finally has cooled enough to unload. I made all of the plaster slump and drape forms in the studio myself, they aren't purchased, no one else has the same. The functional work, cooking and serving vessels are safe to use in the oven, microwave and dishwasher. No lead is used in any part of the process.
Occasionally I take a little artistic trip and make one of a kind pieces in raku, pit firing or carbon trailed vessels. The pit fired work is very silky and smooth with black from the smoke and color flashes from salts, wires, banana peels and so on. The black lines on the carbon trailed pots are hair that is applied to a VERY hot pot, it burns into the surface. Both the carbon trailed and pit fired vessels are extremely labor intensive. Along with the rake, they are also very unpredictable!
Over the years I sold my functional work at art fairs, preferring the direct contact with my customers over wholesaling or consignment. My work in raku, pit firing and carbon trailing sold at art fairs AND galleries in Michigan, Ohio, Santa Fe New Mexico and Biloxi Mississippi.
